Office shows “Unlicensed Product”: a step-by-step fix
Check your account, license and installation before buying or reinstalling.

Identify your version and account
Open Word → File → Account. Under Product Information, note whether you have Microsoft 365, Office 2024 or another version. Also check the email address you used to sign in.
If you cannot open a document, launch Word from Start and look for Account on the opening screen. Labels may vary by version.

Business account: ask your administrator to confirm that your assigned license includes desktop apps. Having Microsoft 365 email does not necessarily mean your plan can activate installed Word or Excel apps.

A one-time purchase of Office does not require an active subscription. Use the account or activation method associated with that purchase; do not buy Microsoft 365 just because no subscription is listed.
Correct the account and update Office
Save your work. If the email address does not match your license, use File → Account → Sign out to leave the incorrect account, then sign in with the correct one. On a business computer, confirm the appropriate account with IT first.
Go to File → Account → Update Options → Update Now. Once finished, close all Office apps and reopen Word. If the option is missing, your organization may manage updates.
If the warning disappears, go to step 7. Otherwise, continue.
Check the date, time and connection
Open Windows Settings → Time & language → Date & time. Check the time zone, enable automatic time when available and select Sync now.
Check that you can open your Microsoft account page in a browser. If several company computers cannot connect, ask IT to review connectivity, proxy settings and access rules. Do not disable device protection to try to activate Office.
Run Microsoft's official activation help
On the affected PC, open the official help page below. Find Microsoft 365: Use the Microsoft 365 activation troubleshooter, select Start and allow the Get Help app to open. Follow its instructions.
This troubleshooter requires Windows 10 or later. For a one-time Office purchase, select your version on the same Microsoft page. For Mac, use the specific source linked at the end.
Open official activation help ↗If it persists, check duplicate installations and repair Office
Search for Control Panel in Start. Open Programs → Programs and Features and search for Office or Microsoft 365. If multiple installations appear, identify the one that matches your license before removing anything. Coordinate with IT on business devices.
To repair Office, select the correct installation and choose Change. If Quick Repair is available, try it and check Word again. If that does not help, Online Repair requires Internet access and may reinstall the apps: confirm you have your credentials and enough time first.
Verify the result
Open Word and check File → Account. Confirm that the Unlicensed Product warning has disappeared. Create a test document, type a line, save it and reopen it.
If the error continues, note your Office version, the exact message and the steps you tried. Share these details with your company's IT team.
