What is the difference between RTO and RPO?

The RTO expresses how long a service can be stopped before causing an unacceptable impact. The RPO expresses how much recent data can be lost, measured in time. Both must be decided with the business and then validated against technical capability and cost.

Risks to review

  • Define technical objectives without consulting operating hours, billing, customer service and obligations.
  • Promise immediate recovery when backups and resources cannot achieve it.
  • Assign the same priority to every service.
  • Ignore dependencies such as internet access, identities, DNS, providers and personnel.

Safe recommendations

  1. List processes and services in order of operational impact.
  2. Estimate consequences after one hour, one day and several days of interruption.
  3. Define realistic RTO and RPO for each service group.
  4. Map applications, data, people, providers and necessary access.
  5. Compare targets with actual copy frequency and restore times.
  6. Review objectives when systems, locations or business processes change.

When to seek specialized help

  • The contractual objectives do not match the available infrastructure.
  • There are many agencies or suppliers without clear recovery commitments.
  • A complete restoration of service has never been measured.
